Women in the workplace
Research from MRG about the different way men and women lead by Rob Kabacoff and Helen Peters (1998) found that there are major differences in the following areas
- Task V’s Strategy
- Expressiveness V’s constraint
Women tend to be more task and results focused and men tend to be more strategic.
Women have a much higher emotional expression whereas men tend to be more constrained and are seen to remain calm e.g. in crisis situations.
Women tend therefore to be seen to have a more energetic, relationship orientated and friendly approach to carrying out their role whereas men are observed to show more strategic behaviours, operating with restraint and objectivity.
MRG know from previous research that strategic thinking and planning ahead are highly valued in senior leaders, suggesting that in general, development in strategic thinking and planning are key development areas for women wishing to move up the executive career ladder.
